Lomba adu kebut motor sudah dikenal  sejak tahun 1900. Kala itu dikelola oleh FICM (Federation Internationale Des Clubs Motocyclistes) disebut sebagai kakek buyutnya FIM saat ini. Lomba dominan dilakukan dieropa karena perkembangan tehnologi khususnya motor belum begitu mendunia pada masa itu. FICM yang dibentuk pada tahun 1938 mengumumkan sebuah kejuaraan balap motor dieropa. Tapi rencana tersebut tidak berjalan mulus dikarenakan terbentur dengan meletusnya perang dunia dua. Setelah perang usai baru kejuaraan balap motor hidup kembali, pelan tapi pasti kompetisi sudah mulai merambah ke tingkat internasional. Kejuaraan Motogp akhirnya diadakan secara resmi pada tahun 1949, dibagi 4 kelas yaitu kelas utama 500cc, 350cc, 250cc dan 125cc.
Tercatat gelaran motogp juara dunia pertama kali dimenangkan oleh Leslie Graham tergabung dalam AJS Porcupine team(500cc), Freddie frith pada Velocette team (350cc), Bruno Ruffo pada Moto guzzi team (250cc) dan Nello Pagani pada Mondial team (125cc). Dekade itu manufaktur Italia, Mondial dan Moto Guzzi bersama Gilera dan MV Agusta mendominasi perlombaan Motogp. Puncaknya adalah sekitar tahun 1950an MV Agusta tidak tanggung-tanggung mereka menyapu bersih 4 kelas berbeda dalam 3 musim berturut-turut (1958-1960). Dan selama 17 tahun dominasinya di 500cc tidak pernah terpecahkan sebagai pabrikan yang bisa memenangkan kelas para raja itu secara berkesinambungan sejak tahun 1958 – 1974 hingga akhirnya pelan-pelan mahkota itu digerogoti oleh pabrikan Jepang yang mulai exist setelah perang dunia II. Motor-motor Jepang mulai booming ditahun 1960. Lewat tiga merk kala itu Honda, Suzuki dan Yamaha meneror pabrikan Italia disemua kelas 125cc, 250cc dan 500cc (1960an). Untuk rider, akhir 1960  munculah sebuah nama  yg cukup menonjol krn prestasinya yaitu Giacomo Agostini. tahun 1960 adalah tahun bersejarah buat Giacomo Agostini. Tahun itulah dia mulai mengukir namanya dalam sejarah Motogp. Giacomo  Agostini adalah rider tersukses sepanjang masa (hanya Valentino Rossi yang mendekati rekornya). Masa keemasannya ketika dia menunggangi MV-Agusta (1968). Karena semakin mahalnya biaya memaksa pabrikan Jepang menarik diri ikut Motogp dan hanya Yamaha yang tersisa kala itu. Hingga awal 1970an baru mereka kembali bergabung. Pada periode itu gelar juara dunia diperebutkan oleh pabrikan eropa (Bultaco, Kreidler, Morbidelli, dan MV Agusta) Amerika (Harley Davidson) dan Jepang (Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki). Dominasi MV Agusta sudah sedikit terganggu oleh motor-motor dari Jepang. Setelah hampir 12thn istirahat Honda kembali dikancah Motogp (pertengahan 1970) dan pada sekitar tahun 1983 mereka mengganti filosofi dari mesin 4tak berganti mesin 2tak (V3 500) lebih terkenal dengan NS500. NS500 sukses mengantarkan Honda menjadi juara dunia untuk pertama kalinya joint dimotogp  lewat rider Freddie Spencer. Tahun 1980-1990 adalah tahun dimana pabrikan Jepang sangat mendominasi. Pada tahun itulah kualitas motor racing masuk pada tahap tehnologi modern dengan tingkat persaingan sangat ketat. Pertarungan antar merk yaitu yamaha, Honda dan Suzuki menghasilkan duel-duel klasik yang sangat menarik. Tercatat Eddie Lawson, Randy Mamola, Freddie Spencer, Wayne Rainey, dan Kevin Schwantz adalah rider-rider brilian pada masa itu. Generasi tahun 1990 keatas 500cc didominasi oleh Michael Dohan dengan NSR 500. Doohan berhasil menorehkan record 5 kali juara dunia hingga cedera memaksa dia harus pensiun dini dari kancah Motogp (1999).
Setelah gaung rider Italia meredup  pasca Agostini pada tahun 1997 muncul Valentino Rossi. Rossi adalah rider juara dunia penutup diseri 500cc 2tak sebelum mesin diganti menjadi 4tak 990cc. Pada jenjang perjalanannya mesin 990cc dirasa terlalu kencang sehingga pihak FIM mengeluarkan regulasi baru untuk memangkas tingkat kecepatan dengan tujuan safety (berdasarkan pengalaman meninggalnya Daijaro kato pada april 2003). So efektif tahun 2007 mesin Motogp dilakukan downgrade lagi menjadi 800cc hingga sekarang. Analisa para petinggi FIM ternyata salah, karena mesin 800cc ternyata tidak lebih pelan dari mesin 990 (Kemajuan teknologi) khususnya dalam melahap tikungan sehingga wacana kuat sedang digodok untuk mengembalikan adu kebut motor kelas premium ini kembali ke 990cc pada tahun 2012……..(Iw/6/03/2010)

1929 Model Big Four Norton - For sale

This 1929 Big Four featured in an earlier blog. Bob:"I have now finished this Norton, a lovely machine; fitted new magneto, mains, fork bushes, wheel bearings, valves, piston and rebore, spokes, original registration and V5C, tyres, tubes, clock in tank, etc etc. Simon checked the numbers with the Works Records and it's the original frame to engine. But I have a problem, I can't hold her up or kick her over without doing more damage to a recent knee operation. I was going to put a chair on but the wife has a change of mind. I think I will have to sell. I'm looking for serious offers. Anyone interested should email John who will forward the emails to me."

Dick on a their (the South Bay group's), annual cross country trip. Probably about 1973. These were some of the first photos Joe Hurst sent me, but I never got around to posting them.

Here's a pretty good shot of Dick and his Knucklehead chopper Loco-Motion. For such a well known bike, there aren't many good photos of it.

I believe this one is in Iowa.

As the name implies, PCX Honda 125 which stands for "Personal Comfort Xaloon" certainly offers a skubek classy comfort with elegant style. But what would happen if the concept was transformed so elegantly futuristic racing?

The result as can be seen in the work of home modifications Ride It from Thailand. Ride It, producers familiar variation in Indonesia is so confident display honda PCX eksteemnya Honda concept.

TZR50 Yamaha engine used only a single cylinder 50cc 2tak. No wonder if the machine is already equipped with water-cooled or radiator, the power just 2.6 Dk. To make it still manages to run, Yamaha to make a 6-speed transmission. But matters of style, not for granted! Entry-level motor sport is more than enough. Just look fairingnya, have split the light like a Yamaha R1. Terraces and stern seat that can carry a pillion section comfortably.

Deltabox chassis combined sobraker telescopic front and monoshock at the rear wheels. Peleknya wide with a design similar beam Yamaha YZF R125. The size of any special tires, 110/80-17 front and 130/70-17 rear. Larger than the size of tire Yamaha Byson! Features disc brakes in front and rear wheels have become the standard. Likewise with the indicator panel which blend digital and analog design supposedly inspired the Yamaha R1.

1928 Model 24 - For sale


For sale at Verralls; a flat tank Norton described as an original 1928 Model 24. I've never seen one before but when the description is correct the dry-sump 588cc engine (!) sitting next to it would originally have been fitted. The 4-speed box is correct for this model. There were a few 588 dry-sump ES2 engines made/sold by Nortons; it is only the differing main shaft diameters which means that standard 588 flywheels can't be used in ES2s so in that respect it could be correct. A very interesting flat tanker with a hefty price tag at £21,500 (for which off course you also get the spare Model 18 engine).


Ian Hatton:"It's a 588cc OHV with the Model 25 type recirculating oiling system. Standard Model 18 engine is presently fitted but I have included a pic of the oil tank to show the return oil line. Obviously the external oil pump is not correct. Also has a four speed cross over gearbox. I believe all these details to be original."



Ducati Recalls 2010-2011 MTS1200 and 2011 Diavel Motorcycles for Steering Defect

Ducati is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Multistrada 1200, and model year 2011, Diavel motorcycles.

The electronic steering lock may fail to disengage during the motorcycle "key-on" process. This has been linked directly to a certain revision of the hands free device software. It could result in a situation where the motorcycle's engine might start while the steering lock is still engaged. A rider could start the motorcycle and attempt to ride away while the steering is still locked.

The number of units affected is 1051.
